Emika / GeRM remix

Always one for bigging up the talented females out there...A former London grime producer who found in Bristol and adsorbed quivering techno inspiration when she moved to Berlin, Emika is going to be one of 2010s most compelling female artists. Just one listen to her 'Drop The Other EP' - released on 18th January, was pretty much all it took to convince. Its delicate pop with an edge, intricate and eerie. 'Drop the Other' mummers and rises - leaving you in a quivering state of euphoria Emika mixes classical pianos with skittering beats, seeping dub bases. For something with a bit more of a classic club sound check out the GeRM remix below. Her full album is due later this year so keep an ear out for Emika's techno influenced pop sounds.

Polish Film Posters

Only recently have i been introduced to the world of Polish Film Posters, but already this morning i have read several articles and ordered myself a book from amazon. These amazing conceptual masterpieces put original American posters to shame every-time, truly beautiful yet hard hitting works of art. Here are just a few of my favourites, but Cinephilia West in London is hosting an exhibition of over fifty rare Polish Film Posters until the end of January. A beautiful example of one of the finest film poster traditions, i think, in the world. Im not going to sit here and tell you the whole history of something i am only beginning to discover myself but check out The Guardian for a brilliant low down....

Loze yourself with Delooze...

Delooze began as a collaboration between an enchanting singer-songwriter longing to place her voice in this confusing musical age, with an unusual electronic musician tired of years of unfocussed experimentation. Drawing upon a creative melting pot of influences from David Bowie to Clint Mansell, the result is a wonderful (recorded and live) mixture of modern electronic twists and synths, classical sounds and haunting yet stunning 'Kate Bush' esque vocals (courtesy of beautiful lead Stacey Delooze). When you listen to this band expect to be entranced and taking back to a time of witch hunts, magic and mystical forests. I first stumbled upon Delooze on one very slightly deborturous gig in London back in 2009 and they more than impressed, so i dropped them a little line and a few questions for an interview on Conversemusic.co.uk. Since then ive been keeping up to date and in touch with the band and 2010 looks like its going to be pretty exciting. The guys have recently signed with uber cool label Gash! and are currently working hard on getting some more material together, with their single expected in April. Apart from producing some fresh soulful sounds, these guys are lovely, so fingers crossed they get the creds they deserve, and expect more on them here when they announce their forthcoming single release! This has to be one of my favourite tracks, if not for the name alone!

Forthcoming Delooze dates

13th Feb - The Playground @ 93 Feet East w/ Crystal Fighters
20th Feb - The Macbeth, London
4th March - Voga Parochia @ The Old Queens Head, Esssex Rd, London
6th March - CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH - all day drink and music fest @ The Stag's Head, London

Weekend Find / 10

It may have been the weekend before payday and the bank balance may have be at the wrong end of rich, but that wasn't my excuse for doing absolutely nothing this weekend....instead i decided to take a bit of time out. So among watching endless 80's movies all pretty much based around drugs, sex and partying (i was living my weekend through these films!), a few classic gems including 'Anchorman', painting and reading books on Paul Weller, The Sex Pistols, detoxing and yoga i took a little trip to newly opened gallery / space, 10.

Tucked away and set in the the arches near Bethnal Green Tube station, 10 is a beautiful little multifunction space for artists, designers and all of those who love creativity. Showcasing a range of different artists in a quaint little gallery (currently on is John Lee Bird with Trashy Queen) it also hosts a coffee shop and vintage fashion/designer boutique. Most recently they set up 'cut and go' hair salon on Saturdays and Sundays - run by two amazing hairdressers you can only book appointments the week before but they only cost £5!! Head over to their Facebook page to find out more and message them for hair appointments - they book up pretty fast and with word spreading I suggest you head their now!

Golden Filter / Open Your Eyes

After a year of touring around the world shrouded in mystery, Penelope and Stephen, aka The Golden Filter, took the long road back home to New York City to self-produce their debut album which casts glimpses into their unearthly world where goddesses, love, myths and mountains reign. Its apparently packed with drum circles, string sections, field recordings, and lots of microphones, taking the album beyond disco to unveil where their secrets are shared and where their mystery dissolves...looking forward to getting the promo in the post!!

The Golden Filter's debut album, VOLUSPA, is set for release on Monday 26th April 2010 on UK Independent Brille Records (home of The Knife, Good Shoes, Lucus Renney and Operator Please.) and ‘Hide Me’ (which you can hear over on their Myspace now) the first single from the album will be released Monday 19th April.

Check out the teaser trailer and watch this space for more streaming and album updates.....

Banksy to premiere "Exit" at Sundance

It seems that notorious street artist Banksy, whose work has decorated his home town of Bristol and Israel's West Bank barrier, has turned his hand to film-making. Being billed as 'The Worlds First Street Art Disaster Movie' this guerrilla pseudo-documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop," is narrated by Rhys Ifans and will have its world premiere on Sunday night at Sundance Film Festival.

Speaking on the film Banksy said: "It's the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed". It has even been rumoured that the film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work, but until sunday no one will actually know if any of the endless rumours are true...and as you can imagine there are quite a few surrounding this film.

Im sure without a doubt, that in true Bansky style there will be many old questions answered but many more new ones raised to always keep you guessing and on your toes. The Film is expected to hit the UK cinemas in March......Watch this space.

Saam Farahmand / Video Portraits

London based video artist Saam Farahmand directs films in the context of art, music, fashion, television, performance, virals and documentaries. Farahmand’s bill of buzzworthy films include colorful and clever music videos for Klaxons, Hercules & Love Affair, Janet Jackson and Simian Mobile Disco, a documentary featuring Soulwax, and a fashion film for Alexander McQueen. Sam is just about to release his latest piece of work video portraits and its another exciting, fun and colourful project. The video features the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, Carri Munden of Cassetteplaya, Simon Taylor from Klaxons, artist Matthew Stone and David Dewaele from Soulwax, all dancing to their favourite songs.....basically a bunch of trendies dancing like prats (but we all know its just east london geek cool- so they act stupid so they are actually cool) but some of the people involved i really like and i have been following Saam Farahmand for a while. Did i mention the launch night is also on a friday and what better way to spend it than with some weird beautiful video art, beautiful people, booze just round the corner from my house! You can check out the trailer on the video portraits website...its hilarious. www.videoportraits.org and you can get advance tickets now for £10....

Sam also has his own gallery space, Boyschool, in the good old East end to support the work of emerging artists and develop his own future projects...check out more here

Love Vintage, Love Music, Love Free Booze....

Its one of those things your not sure if you want to mention, but being the kind hearted person i am i thought id share this little gem with all of you too!

A home from home the EAST END THRIFT STORE is literally on my door step and is by far one of the best cheap vintage shops in London, mainly for the fact that it stocks an amazing array of vintage pieces, their prices aren't ridiculous and it isn't on Brick Lane! Instead you will find the perfect place to whittle away a few hours (and pounds in your bank account) down a little street near Whitechapel Tube. So no Brick Lane crowds or price tags! Until it is swarmed upon by the masses, which lets face it it will soon be it seems this place couldn't get much better...but it has because the East End Thrift Store is throwing a Free Party!! Expect DJs, Free Booze, Clothes and thrift store prices.

Its on the 28th of January 7pm-11pm, which seems to defeat the object of getting people drunk and buying lots of clothes as its the day before most pay days...none the less i will be there right at the front of the cue probably drunk and with a bundle of obscure spontaneous buys...

Hate Snow? Love Woolrich!

WOOLRICH ARCTIC PARKA

While the snow has pretty much left us now for another year, the chill factor is still lurking around...selfishly robbing us of any chance of getting out the open toed shoes and jumpsuits in full glory! A/W09 has seen some of the most beautiful knitwear pieces and statement garments but alas these will not hold by themselves against the latest british cold snap and there is nothing worse than having to cover up a beautifully mastered outfit with jackets, jumpers and unattractive triple layers..its a sad fact but even the most stylish of us are beaten down by practicality! But there is a god!

It may be January but if you buy anything this month it has to be The Woolrich Artic Parka...its pretty hard to get your hands on in the UK but that just makes you want it even more ! I've had mine for almost two years and it is still going strong. This beautiful jacket not only looks good (SJP, Kylie Minogue and all fashwahs! at New York Fashion Week are fans!) but with Woolrich's 180 years experience in making these technical, durable jackets complete with a beautiful fur trimmed hood (faux fur is available) you couldn't find anything better to keep you warm and looking stylish!

There are a few independents stocking it but its hard to find so check out these sites and stores too....They are mainly men's parkas but personally i prefer this slightly loser, less tailored fit..and so does SJP!

Today is most to be the depressing day of the year

So this may put a smile on your face and cheer you up....

Disclosure

It makes me sick sometimes to stumble upon such talented artists when they are so young, but these guys despite only being 15 & 18 are one gem of a find, so i put my prejudices aside to share their magic with you! Disclosure are dynamic young duo made up of two brothers, filling your soul with heavy basslines (without the headache) and electronic samples. They may not get you dancing but they will take you somewhere just as euphoric and uplifting....

So with Friday having come and gone and post work pub drink hangovers fuzzing your brain, sit back with your bacon sarnie & cup of tea (or in my case porridge and raisins) and let these guys take you away, far far away from your hangovers and revitalise your body ready for another night out...

p.s - its never too early for a hair of the dog!

Dont feel guilty....

MJ Cole invites you to the weekend...

Another selection from MJ Cole to get you ready for the weekend..........

Too Young To Love

New Wave Pop synth Music but born and breed in the depths of a mystical forest in the depths of Italy. This is Too Young To Love. Wether you see it as a negative or positive this band are already receiving praise from ‘lifestyle bibles’ such as ‘SuperSuper’ and ‘Dazed and Confused’, so you could easily pass them off as a lifestyle hipster band, yet their banging sounds and innovative music making skills means that there is a lot more to them than meets the eye. It seems at the moment that Italy (especially Milan) is currently setting the trends, bursting to the seams with creative innovative bands. Europe on the whole has never really been associated with its indie bands, but with a new year ahead and music lovers hungry for something new in 2010 there are definitely more than a few murmurs coming from the other side of the big river, with european artists leading the way in creating something fresh, exciting and possible the sound of the year.

Too Young To Love currently are creating a collection of vocal-absent tracks that all spawn from the concept of ‘Elements and Mind’. They may be heavy hitting at first, but allow tracks such as ‘Mytria’ and ‘Down to Infinity’ to seep into your sub consciousness and you’ll be smitten with the Spector-esque production values and starry eyed synths. From the depths of Italy to the depths of you, one small step for man, one giant step for a band about to transform your listening habits in 2010

Keep an eye on these guys to find out when they will be playing in the UK www.myspace.com/tooyoungtolove

Watch out for this one....

Peter O'Grady is a 22 year old dance music producer from south London who has been mixing since the young age of 13. Now under the cheeky guise of Joy Orbison and along with his own label Doldrums Recordings this young talented DJ/Producer is storming line ups around the country whilst producing his own unique tracks. For such a young guy, he knows his stuff and has been greeted with almost religious awe with his debut single, Hyph Mngo, hailed as "the most essential purchase of the season" and "the best dubstep/post-garage track of the year". With a range of influences and appreciation for everything from Todd Edwards to Phil Spector, his sounds are eclectic, deep, epic yet banging, morose, drenched in synths, and rhythmically occupying the uncharted territory between dubstep, garage and house. This guy is more than just a DJ / Producer but a musical craftsman - creating music that is fresh, catchy and 'now' , but with the talent, knowledge and craft firmly in his fingers Joy Orbison is definitely going to be sticking around for a while...

Next on his agenda:

8th January - Fabric, London
12th February - Tufnell Park Dome/supporting Four Tet, London
13th February - Bigger Than Barry, Birmingham

Little Boots / dangerDan

I am not the biggest fan of Little Boots so any one who comes along and mixes and mashes up her tunes to create something that is fresh and danceable (without the cheese) is a winner in my books. This new remix of earthquake comes from dangerDan, who instead of churning out the same old dancefloor banger or epic journey remix has opted for more straight forward disco vibes. A mixture of A-Trax's remix of Heads will Roll and Boy 8s-Bit's remix of La Roux's Quicksand.

So grab the tequila (or espresso shots if your at work!) and sit back and enjoy....

Treeless Mountain

The latest feature film from director So Yong Kim, Treeless Mountain is a beautiful and delicate depiction of her own memories growing up as a child in Korea. Treeless Mountain immerses viewers in the lonely world of its two young protagonists – six-year-old Jin (Hee-yeon Kim) and her four-year-old sister Bin (Song-hee Kim). When their mother (Soo-ah Lee) goes in search of their estranged father the girls are forced to up sticks and move in with their stern Aunt (Mi-hyang Kim). They spend their days waiting for their mother to return and saving pennies to fill their large pink piggy bank. A simple yet heartfelt tale, So Yong Kim magically captures the world from their eyes....

Soundtrack from the weekend....

The Mods had designer suits, Italian scooters and The Who. Rockers had leathers, motorbikes and Elvis and last week i had a bit of a 1960's musical binge playing everything from The Who, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces, The Yardbirds to name just a few! Some say that Mod died in 1963, but in my opinion it was in 1965 that it really started to make impact...with the combination of images of the Brighton beach riots and some signature releases from one of the original Mod bands: The Who all coming together to cement its time in history...there were several films on the go last weekend..and while im sure most of you have seen this i just wanted to drop it into your minds once more....buy it, rent it and definitely pick up the soundtrack!

Tracklisting

Im the Face - High Numbers
Zoot Suit - High Numbers
I Am the Sea
Real Me
I'm One
5:15
Love Reign O'Er Me
Bell Boy
I've had Enough
Helpless Dancer
DOctor Jimmy
Get Out and Stay Out
Four Faces
Joker James
Punk and the Godfather

If you haven't seen the film yet, I suggest you do. A true british classic and the directing debut from Franc Roddam its a must see...but even if its not your type of thing i suggest you give it a casual watch just for the comedy portrayal from a very weedy Phil Daniels of a young Mod of his tits on pills and a strangely attractive young Ray Winstone...

Next weekend....i don't know but it definitely wont be 'Spice World The Movie' and the 90's girl power movement just yet...The nineties is Not Vintage yet please.
